New Start

30 03 2009

Ok, I got the new insoles and tried my running shoes for a 2.1 km slow run. It was a run/walk/run not to stress the knee. I felt good, of course, I wanted to run faster and longer… but I didn’t. I will give it some time, progress slowly and focus on the biking and upper body strengthening. I felt very tired on a 2h ride (in the Gym) because I didn’t eat properly. I kept a good pace and on a harder gear and I remember thinking it will not be a peach to ride the Alps :P . But that’s OK, I am (getting) mentally prepared and am working consistently on the physical preparation. I feel like registering for my first bike challenge in Germany. I will do it this week, only after I pay the rent…

Back to the running experience, it was nice and I am feeling a bit different after Saturday, but I think last week I felt more discomfort because of the cold. This last days I sometimes didn’t even remember I had this injury but it is still too soon for celebrating.

The shoes are just awesome, they look great and that’s not even the reason I chose them, not at all. They feel really supporting and now I know what “control running shoes” are all about.

The insoles are a bit strange, they support the inner side of my feet and also the outer rim, and… they have a bump in the front part of the foot at the middle. It feels almost like having a (soft) stone in each shoe but there should be a medical explanation for it, I will investigate.

Tomorrow will start another training week, still no running plan from the PT but I have my biking plan and want also to add a 2.5 k’s run to the log. I still have no BPM graphs for the runs, I need to buy a new watch somewhere in the future.

I think I should earn it first with some sweat…

Let’s say… I will only buy the watch (when I have the money and) when I sum up 100 k’s in the running log!! Sounds good. Would only sound better if Polar would give it to me free (sponsor’s needed)…

(Edit) Have a better idea. I will run one kilometer for each Euro it will cost me… 399 kms it will be.

(Edit) Including the GPS G3 sensor the price is 499€, so… got a lot of running still to do.

Me And My Dreams

26 03 2009

I always wanted to do sports. I have always done sports. I began with 6 years old and it never went away. In fact it’s getting more and more serious. After last year, while living in Munich, I decided to do a Transalp a lot has gone by. The craziest stuff, problems, issues and yet here I am again, training as hard as I can to make it happen.

Even fighting my left knee ITBS I am confident about reaching my goals, and I can say that I will be aiming for yet another challenge, a Marathon!

Icing the knee

Icing the knee

I just came from the Gym and I smile with the “Blue Ice Pack” on my knee remembering the reaction of my personal trainer when I told him my goals:

PT: So, what are your goals (in German, of course…)?

Me: A Transalp Bike Tour and a running a Marathon (I had absolutely no doubt in my mind!)

PT: Hum… That’s a first, I had never heard such goals…

After a small chat we decided to make a plan for the Marathon, but with the comment: “But you can’t run!!”

Right, I can’t run for now, because of the left knee issue I decided to stop. I stopped after I went to the doctor last week. He told me I have slightly bowed legs (where?!) and I need to wear special insoles for running and make an adjustment to my regular shoes.

I went to buy some specific running shoes and tomorrow after I pick up the insoles I will try a low pace run on the treadmill. I confess I am very anxious because with all the ice, inflammation cream, stretching, muscle strengthening and the stopping… I really need to overcome this and get on to some serious training.

I am feeling very good right now, I lowered my pulse with just 3 weeks of training and the upper body Gym workouts are paying off. I need this to go away!!!

So for now my dreams/goals for this year are:

- Transalp Bike Challenge.

- Running a Marathon.

To reach them (besides the individual training) I plan on going to some events with intermediate difficulty until I progress to the final challenges.

Regarding the running it will be the greatest challenge because I’m starting from before zero!! I presently can’t even run a single kilometer… It’s going from 0 to 42 in 6 months :) .

For the biking part I’m looking at some hard challenges starting in May.

Keep in touch. Today I will dream about my new insoles and my new running shoes… I wish…
